The V&D building in Gorinchem has been let. Frisian company Kooistra.com bv will open a Maxx there in a few weeks, a department store with a constantly changing range. “We aim to be open before the end of this month,” says board member Tjitse Lawerman.

Michon Vastgoed from Gorinchem found the temporary tenant for the department store of almost 5,400 square metres at the foot of the Grote Kerk. The building, owned by Stichting Pensioenfonds Openbaar Vervoer, has now been empty for just over a year. V&D closed its doors in the town for good on 19 April last year.

Michon handed the building over to Lawerman on Monday evening. “It’s going to be really nice,” says Michon, who lives in Gorinchem himself. “Even if it is temporary. The owner is working on a future plan for the building. Until that is ready, Kooistra.com is renting it. At least until the end of the year.”

Lawerman: “This week the racking goes in and then we start filling the building. We begin on the ground floor and work our way up. But as soon as the shop floor downstairs is filled, the doors open. We estimate that will take about three weeks. In principle we have rented the former V&D up to and including December.”

Kooistra.com bv often looks after someone else’s shop. “We always open our Maxx branches on a temporary lease. With our shops we make sure buildings are in use again until the owner gets going with other ideas. That is why the number keeps changing: at the moment we have a Maxx XXXL department store in Groningen that mainly sells camping and outdoor items. And every so often our warehouse in Friesland temporarily turns into a sales point for consumers.”
