Winter clothing left unsold during lockdown: where does it go?

Leeuwarden – Extending the lockdown by three weeks will have disastrous consequences for clothing and shoe shops unless there is generous compensation for written-off stock. Retailers are left with large collections of unsold winter clothing. Where do all those cable-knit jumpers, thermal leggings and padded coats end up?
January is normally the last month in which clothing shops can still sell their winter stock at a reasonable margin. After that, traditionally, the leanest period of the year follows until mid-March. There is no more interest in winter coats and jumpers, and consumers find it still a bit early to buy spring and summer clothing.
